General FAQs

  • Retropia makes camera accessories and digital tools designed to give your photos and videos film-like character. Our product range includes the Repurposed Disposable Film Camera Lens, Retro Flash, Vintage Glow Filter, Optical Waist Level Viewfinder, film emulation presets and LUTs.

  • Yes. The lens creates visible softness, vignetting, flare and chromatic shifts as light passes through it. The exact result changes with your camera, lighting and subject, but you will see the optical character before editing.

  • Neither. It is a physical lens that shapes light before it reaches the sensor, so the character is captured in the original file rather than applied afterwards.

  • It is built for character rather than clean coverage. The burst is hard and slightly warm, with fast falloff, so you get the direct on-camera look of a point-and-shoot night photo instead of an evenly lit scene.

  • It blooms the highlights and takes a little contrast out of the frame. Bright areas halate outward, skin smooths, and point lights pick up the gentle haze of older glass — all in camera, before the file is written.

  • A mirrored finder that mounts to your camera so you compose looking down into it, the way you would on a twin-lens or medium format body. It changes how you stand, how people react to being photographed, and it makes low angles comfortable to hold.

  • Yes. They are independent of the hardware and work on any stills or footage. They are built to match the lens, so the two stack naturally, but neither one needs the other.

  • Yes, and most people do. The Vintage Glow Filter threads onto the front of the Disposable Film Lens, the Retro Flash sits in the hot shoe above either of them, and the presets finish the file afterwards. Each one adds its own layer, so start with one and build up.

How It Works

  • Choose the correct mount for your camera when ordering. Attach the lens, enable "Shoot without lens" in your camera menu once, and start shooting. There are no electronic contacts, no settings to adjust.

  • Slide it into your camera's hot shoe, switch it on, and shoot. It fires on every frame at a fixed output, so there is no metering to set — you control the exposure with your aperture and your distance to the subject.

  • It screws onto the filter thread on the front of your lens. The thread size is printed on the lens barrel or inside the cap — pick that size at checkout. It comes off just as quickly, so you can shoot with and without it in the same session.

  • It sits over your camera's screen and reflects it upward, so you look down to compose. Flip it open, adjust the shade, and shoot from the chest or the hip. Nothing connects electronically — it is optics only.

  • Only one, and only once: enable "Shoot without lens" — some brands call it "Release without lens". After that the camera fires normally. Because the lens reports no aperture, work in manual or shutter priority.

  • It works with any camera that has a standard hot shoe, using the centre pin only rather than proprietary TTL. If your camera has no hot shoe, it can still be triggered off-camera as a slave.

  • A download link is emailed to you straight after checkout. The presets import into Lightroom on desktop or mobile in a couple of taps, and the LUTs drop into Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut or any editor that reads .cube files. A short setup guide is included.

  • Yes. The lens behaves the same way for stills and motion, so the softness, flare and vignetting match across both. Plenty of people buy it for video first.

Guarantees

  • Shoot with any physical Retropia product for up to 100 days. If it is not for you, contact support@retro-pia.com and we will help arrange an eligible return under the current refund policy.

  • It covers the physical products — lenses, flashes, filters and viewfinders. Digital downloads such as presets and LUTs are delivered instantly and are handled separately, so write to us if a file is wrong or will not open and we will sort it out.

  • Write to support@retro-pia.com with your order number and the camera you actually shoot. As long as the lens is unused and in its packaging, we will help you swap it for the correct fitting.

  • No. The optics sit in a solid housing with a metal mount and there are no electronics to fail. Treat it like any other lens — cap it in the bag, keep the rear element clean — and it will outlast the camera it is on.

  • Yes. It carries a manufacturer warranty against defects. If it stops firing or charging within that period, send us your order number and a short description of the fault and we will arrange a repair or a replacement.

  • Filter threads vary by lens rather than by camera, so a mismatch is easy to fix. Contact support with your lens model and we will exchange it for the right thread or point you to the step-up ring you need.

Shipping & Returns

  • Yes. A tracking link is emailed as soon as your parcel leaves us. Tracking can take a day or so to start updating after the label is created, so give it a moment before worrying.

  • Email support@retro-pia.com with your order number and what you would like to do. We will confirm whether the item is eligible and send you the return instructions.

  • Yes, where the replacement is in stock. Tell us what you have and what you would rather have, and we will arrange the swap in one step instead of a return followed by a fresh order.

  • It depends on why the item is coming back. If it arrived damaged or is not what you ordered, we cover it. For change-of-mind returns the cost is usually yours, and the confirmation we send will say exactly what applies to your order.
